The armor of the M1 delivered in 1984 was a big step forward in protection against direct fire. The main step was the M1A1 in 1985, It offered better protection for the crew, and the new German 120mm smoothbore gun M256, produced under license by Watervllet Arsenal, gives this Abrams version an increased firepower in comparision to the M1 (105mm M68A1 main gun). Another technical advantage that contrasts with the arsenal of the Warsaw Pact states was the introduction of the M1A1HA. The M1A1HA provides 70% more protection to the crew members than the older M1. Until 1991 most US tank battalions and cavalry regiments in Germany were equipped with the upgraded M1A1HA version.
